US Trip 2011 Part 1

Day 1 Sunday August 21
Well after spending Saturday at the Shelton Rock and Mineral Society Tailgate Sale and Swap, we were tired and got a late start. We left home making sure all was well and headed to Seattle to grandson Jasper’s third birthday party. The trip was Hwy 3 to 101 to I-5. We cut off at hwy 18 to 167 north to I-405. At the end of I-405 we took 525 to old 99 north to Mable Grove RV park space 34 on 124th and 99. At 2:20 we stopped by Fred Meyers and got some things then headed over to the Allison’s house for the birthday party. Fun time with nice dinner and dessert and Jasper opening presents. We left late to get back to the motor home and sleep.

Day 2 Monday August 22.
We got up late and had a leisurely breakfast and headed out to US hwy 2. From 99 we went East across I-5 to hwy 9 north to US 2. As we approached Leavenworth, the fire in Tumwater canyon was still smoldering along the road. We ate lunch in the RV parking area in Leavenworth. Lots of traffic and construction along the way today. We stopped for the night in Coulee City Community park space 5 on the shores of Bank’s lake which was low.
310 miles first two days.

Day 3 Tuesday August 23
We slept in late. Left Coulee City at about 10:30 and continued East on US 2 to Spokane and stayed at Alderwood RV Park space 65 which is on the North side of town.. After lunch, Judy showed me around town where she used to live, go to school, and work. We went to Marycliff where she went to Catholic high school which had been a mansion. It is now office space but still as nice and she was excited to tell me all about it. Next we drove to where she used to live on 10 acres on the south side of Spokane and the 10 blocks she used to walk to the bus carrying her baritone horn and books. The property had been sold and everything removed. Part of the property now is classified as a wet land and appears to be in the process of being preserved. The area all around is now houses which used to be small farms and woods. We also drove by a small pond where she learned to ice skate. Got back to the motor home after stopping at a mall to get Judy a new watch. A late dinner of pork, potatoes, salad and Mexican veggies. Went to bed early after a long day..
107 miles

Day 4 Wednesday August 24
After breakfast, we drove to the South end of town to Manito Park where Judy spent lots of time playing around when she was younger. We specifically went to the Duncan gardens and walked around the Rose garden, the sunken garden, and the Japanese garden with a pond with big koi. Many of the flowers were past their spring prime but still a pretty place.
Then we headed downtown to the refurbished Davenport Hotel built in 1907 and looked around. It was very pretty.
Judy used to go to dances there when she was in high school. For lunch we went across the street to the Davenport Towers and had BLT’s. Afterwards we went to Riverside park and watched the 1909 Looff 101 year old carousel.
For excitement we took the sky ride over Spokane Falls (to me a cascade). Before heading home to cool down and have steak for dinner we drove a little further North to Wandermire golf course where there was a pond Judy and family went swimming in..

Day 5 Thursday August 25
Left Spokane and headed North on US 2. We stopped for lunch at Bonners Ferry. Arrived in Libby, Montana and stayed at Woodland RV Park just West of town. Nice day‘s drive. Temperature in the 90‘s.
Happy for air conditioning.
168 miles today.

Day 6 Friday August 26
After a leisurely morning we headed East again on US 2 to Kalispell, Montana. There was a brief rain just before Kalispell and the temperature today was hot. We are spending our time here at the Spruce Park on the River space E4. Judy called our friends here, Matt and Linda, and made arrangements for visits over the next few days. After dinner, we went to Best Buy and Judy bought herself a notebook computer so she would not have to bother me using mine all the time.
Drove 94 miles today.

Day 7 Saturday August 27
Judy and Linda spent a good part of the day out shopping, having lunch and visiting. I stayed at the motor home and washed Goldie, ate lunch, did some lapidary stuff, and got most of the stuff ready for dinner. Judy got back early and helped finish preparation for dinner. Matt and Linda came over for dinner and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Day 8 Sunday August 28
We got up early and went to a Lutheran church where Linda was playing the piano for the service, after which six of us went out to breakfast at a restaurant on the shores of Flathead Lake. Judy and Linda split and went to prepare for the potluck dinner which was going to be held latter in the afternoon. Matt and I split and went to a benefit guitar jam concert in Bigfort. The potluck dinner, hosted by Matt and Linda, brought together many of Judy’s special friends when she worked as director of nursing at the Immanuel Lutheran home here in Kalispell. It was a very fun time.
