Part 4 April 5 to April 11

Day 18 Monday April 5
We went into town and mailed some more rocks for the rock club, updated the blog and did some financial stuff on the internet. Spent the afternoon cleaning up the motor home (Judy) and me the Jeep. Resorted the rocks we have collected and threw some more out. I rearranged the basement to even out the weight. Got Goldie hooked up to the motor home. Emptied the holding tanks. Guess we are ready for tomorrow.

Judy’s word
We are heading for our evening mineral bath for the last time. Ohhhhhh, sad.

Day 19 Tuesday April 6
Left good old Beatty and headed south on US 95 towards “Lost Wages”. We somehow missed the northern bypass so had to head into downtown to get to I-15 north. Continued north to just passed St. George, hwy 9 and drove the nine miles to Willowind RV park. Unfortunately they were full but they let us dry camp for the night. Have reservations for two more nights. I thought everyone headed north to be home for Easter!

Judy’s words
Needless to say… no mineral bath tonight. We did cook a stupendous dinner and managed to wash the dishes. We have had a surprise view of the red rocks to get here. More exploration in Zion tomorrow. J

Day 20 Wednesday April 7
Waited around in the morning to get a hold of a doctor to see about medicine I was taking. Finally we headed off to Zion National Park. We missed the bus into the main park area so we drove the Zion-Mt. Carmel road through the park which goes through a mile long tunnel. We stopped many places walking, taking pictures, hiking a canyon and climbing on the sandstone. Fun time.

Day 21 Thursday April 8
Wanted propane so we waited for the person to come and fill the tank. We were just about ready to head to the park when she arrived. She could only fill the tank to the two-thirds mark. Why? Unknown. Off we went and caught the shuttle. We road the bus all the way to the end which is where Zion Narrows is located. Did some hiking along the Virgin river. Beautiful sunny hike but cool. We took the bus back down the canyon, stopping at many of the stations and doing some hiking. Great time. Once out of the park we stopped at a very unique antiques shop which could be a museum. Lots of old stuff. Went to the grocery store just across the street from the RV park We made a nummy chicken dinner.

Judy’s words

Zion does not disappoint. The colors are almost shocking. Of course it is early Spring and the new green plant growth is a not so subtle contrast. We have decided to stay here longer…just can’t fit it all in in the two days we planed.
Spring break… many small munchkins on the trails. Their energy and laughter is delightful.

Day 22 Friday April 9
We went up to Hurricane Mesa. The road starts about 5 miles from La Verkin and is black top all the way up. Once on top it is dirt and luckily recently bladed. On top of the mesa we found agates (small) and petrified wood. We continued to dr1ve about 9 miles up the road and made it almost to Smith Mesa. Very beautiful, spectacular views of the West side of Zion National Park. On top of Hurricane Mesa is were in the 1950’s the government tested jet ejection seats using a rocket sled having the ejected seat parachute off the edge of the mesa. The place is still off limits.

Day 23 Saturday April 10
We went up Kolob Terrace Road to Kolob Plateau. We drove into Zion Park until the road was closed because of snow. Beautiful scenery with snow, juniper, pines, cactus and sage brush all mixed in together. We went on a few short hikes. After lunch we headed to the north end of Zion Park by heading up I-15 to the Kolob Canyon entrance. Spectacular views of the cliffs and mesas with the red rock, green spring growth and snow. It was however windy with temperatures in the low 60’s. Beautiful day again.

Judy’s word

The last day in Zion. The most unbelievable beauty and color. We are on the way tomorrow to the famous Brice Canyon. We are getting good at moving on. J

Day 24 Sunday April 11
We left Hurricane and drove to Escalante where we plan to spend at least a week. Tomorrow at least we plan a day off from doing any kind of sightsee, etc. A day of rest.
We have driven the motor home 417 miles since we left Bailey, Nevada
