Part 4 March 31 to April 5

Day 21 Thursday March 31 We decided to somewhat take it easy today. We went shopping to look for plastic wine glasses for the motor home. Finally found some. Went looking for other things. Wanted one new set of drawer slides. Bought some at Home Depot but turns out they did not lock the drawer in properly. We went to Dah rock shop and looked at all the nice things they had. Then we went to jewelry store to look around. Got back home and had a nice dinner. Was in the low-90’s today.

Day 22 Friday April 1 (April Fools) Judy and I got up early, had breakfast and headed out the door to the 4th Ave street fair. It started at 10 but we got there early to get a good parking place. There were about 500 main booths down the middle of the street, plus more on side streets and on the sidewalks. Lots of people and hot. Got up to 95 today so we quit early. We decided to go to the DeGrazia studio. He is the well known guy who painted little Mexican kids with round eyes. We went over to Craig and Wanda’s for rib dinner (yumm) and sat around talking until about 9 at which time it had cooled to 83 degrees.

Day 23 Saturday April 2 We went to Craig and Wanda’s and got there about 10. We all went to “El Presidio” which was a Spanish fort built in 1770’s. Only one acre of the eleven acres site is restored and the rest is covered up by modern buildings. On the weekend they have volunteers playing the part of various people such as blacksmith, etc. We met a man dresses as a Spanish soldier of the era. What was really neat is that his great-great-great grandfather was one of the soldiers at the fort at the time. They also had soldiers who fired muskets and a cannon. Our friend Wanda was dressed in period costume and acted as a greeter for visitors coming into the fort. We went home and cooled off as it was hotter than yesterday. At about 5:30 we went back to Craig and Wanda’s who took us to a Mexican restaurant which served good fish dishes. Yummy. Very fun hot day.

Day 24 Sunday April 3 We left the Prince of Tucson RV park stopping at a truck stop to fill up on diesel. Got just under 10 mpg. Continuing on we drove I-10 to Benson, taking exit 302 to highway 90. We will spent the night at Cochise RV Resort space 295. After laundry and lunch we drove to Tombstone, site of the OK corral gunfight. Walked around town (main street) stopping in at Big Nose Kate’s salon. We had a beer and listened to this old guy play a piano and sing. We had our pictures taken there with “western gear” on. Very touristy place and a lot of people. On the way back the mountains were breathtaking. We are having left over ribs from two night ago then the hot tub. It was very winds this afternoon but a lot cooler. 72 degrees , ahhhh. Drove 50 miles today.

Day 25 Monday April 4 Today we went to Bisbee, an old copper mining town. We got there just in time to take the 10:30 underground mine tour into the Queen mine. They had us put on rain coats, hard hats and our own personal miner’s light. We road a small mining train about 1500 feet into the mine stopping several times to look at different mining operations. Unbelievably there are over 2000 miles of tunnels under the mountain. Our guide was an old time retired miner and was a delight in his presentation and knowledge. Fun trip. Afterwards, we drove to the local huge open pit mine. No tours but an overview. It is still operational but did not look very busy. Went to lunch then walked around town a bit. We hit a whole bunch of “antique” type shops. Most stuff was very pricey. Drove back home a different way.

Day 26 Tuesday April 5 After a leisurely morning, we went just about to the town of St. Davids where we wanted to find some selenite roses, known locally as St. David’s desert roses. The drive took us past the Arizona Powder Plant which took up a lot of area as one might expect for an explosive manufacturing plant.. We found the site and dug around a bit and found some selenite sheets. We ate lunch and then drove to another spot. Here, we found cliffs of selenite (gypsum) crystals in solid masses. It appears to me that these cliffs break off pieces which fall on the ground and get covered up with dirt. The occasional rain then reshapes them a little. Had a nice dinner and then the hot tub again.
