Part 8 Day 49-57 April 28 - May 6

Day 49 Thursday April 28
Left South Fork and continued West on 160. We got to I-25 and headed north to Colorado Springs and took exit 141. Drove about 3 miles West on 24 to 31 street and spent the night at Fountain Creek RV park space 83.

Day 50 Friday April 29
Well, high wind warnings today so we decided to stay put. Some hard gusts where we were. My cousin called and we made plans to meet tomorrow at their home near Denver. We did the laundry then headed out for the Garden of the Gods which is a city park. It was a very pretty place. We got someone to take our picture with Pike’s Peak in the background. So after dinner we decided to get the motor home ready to leave early in the morning. OOPS! The slide would not come in. Re-lubricated the slide, found a pin missing but none of this helped. I will have to call a local repair place in the morning.

Day 51 Saturday April 30
A well qualified man came and helped get the slider to go in and out. Whew, no major problems. Probably just not the right lubrication. Well we then got the motor home ready to leave and took off. We left Colorado Springs by taking I-25 north then onto 470 to I-70 to Golden Colorado. We set up at Dakota Ridge RV park just off I-70 on Colfax street space 31. Judy I then went over to my cousin Lee and wife Diane whom I had not seen in several years and of course Judy had never met. We had a nice dinner and a great enjoyable time with them.

Day 52 Sunday May 1 Happy May day.
We left Golden by taking I-70 to I-76 then on to I-25 just North of Denver proper. We left I-25 at exit 240 driving to the Boulder Fairgrounds RV park taking space 4. We then went to Judy’s friend Carole who lives about 8 miles closer to the mountains. A nice visit and good dinner. Carole then came to see the motor home and stayed for a pizza dinner.
Good riddance Osama Bin Ladin and miserable people like him.
Drove 48 miles today.

Day 53 Monday May 2
I stayed at the motor home and did some work. I cleaned off all the oil on the slide out mechanism and put silicone oil on it. Also put silicone lubricant on other things on the motor home as required. Wiped off the outside too. Judy and Carole went “shopping” in Boulder. Carol stayed for dinner which was stir fry.

Day 54 Tuesday May 3
We took off from Boulder and headed North on I-25 to Cheyenne, WY,. We took exit 7 and headed East to A and B RV Park and got space S12. A day of travel and rest. We did go to the visitor’s center to get information about what to do in Wyoming.
Drove 75 miles today.

Day 55 Wednesday May 4
After a leisurely breakfast, we headed into downtown Cheyenne and went to the state museum. It was very good with exhibits of prehistoric times, early days, native Americans, and Spanish influence. We then headed off to a flea market. Judy found a glass lid to one replace one she had broken and a candle stick for the motor home. The RV park has a BBQ restaurant so be bought some beef brisket for dinner. Yumm.

Day 56 Thursday May 5 Happy Cinco de Mayo
We well left Cheyenne which was sunny with little wind but 48 degrees. Off we went West on I-80 and soon ran into gusty headwinds. Lots of snow patches in shady places along the road and the hills. Saw many pronghorns today, groups from 3 to 21. Made it to Rawlins taking exit 211 to Western Hills RV park taking space 48. Really gusty. Went into town and did a little sight seeing, grocery shopping and stopping at a rock shop. The guy had some pretty things especially black and green jade. Not helpful at all about where to go. We had soft taco’s for dinner in honor of 5/5.
Drove 149 miles today.

Day 57 Friday May 6
Today was rock hound day. We headed East on I-80 to Walcott then headed south on 130. Along the way I saw a badger and we saw lots of pronghorns all day long. The first place we stopped to get petrified wood and agates required us to cross over private land to get to BLM land so we didn’t. The next place was just a little further down the road . We went to the North Platt river where we found some black agates and river rounded petrified wood. On the way back to the main high way we stopped at a road cut and found more black agate which was formed in a chalk like matrix. Found out later at a Forest Service Office that the first mile was public land. We continued down the road to check out Saratoga hot springs. The public pool looked inviting so we decided to stop on the way back. We then headed 20 some miles further down the road to the town of Encampment were in 1870 the first rendezvous of mountain men was held. Just past that was mine that was suppose to have mica and garnet but it was a bust, but we ate our lunch there. Along the way we saw a herd of 21 deer. On the way back stopped at the hot springs but did not stay in too long since the water was very hot, over 104 degrees. This pool was free provided by this small town of 480 people and we figure if it were in Seattle they would charge $10 an hour to use the pool.
